Spotlight Skill: Perseverance

Spotlight Skill: Perseverance
During the months of November and December, all kindergarten through fifth grade classes will participate in a lesson on what it means to be perseverant. Students will participate in an experiment using a super ball and a hard boiled egg in order to identify characteristics that are often needed before one achieves success.
Students will listen to and observe the "self talk" and actions of the superball and the hard boiled egg as they try to reach their target or goal. Students will develop an understanding that making mistakes or "failing" when learning something new happens to all of us. Did any of us really learn to tie shoes the first time we tried? Did any of us really learn to ride a two wheel bike on the first try? It is only when we work hard, maintain a positive attitude, and persevere, that we can achieve success.
Failure + perseverance = Success.

Do you recognize these famous "superball" people
who endured numerous failures, but persevered and achieved success?

After the experiment, first grade students in Mrs. Fuch's class were able to identify characteristics of "superball" people and "hard boiled egg" people. They figured out the secret formula to success:
Failure + Perseverance = Success.
Failure + Perseverance = Success.
Students classified story cards as examples or non examples of perseverance and explained why. They even answered challenge questions and were able to identify how they would show perseverance in different situations! Way to go Mrs. Fuch's class!
